Our Staff

Director
Matthew Fledderjohann has worked as a writing center tutor and writing program administrator for over fourteen years and at four different institutions. He brings to 澳门六合彩's writing center his enthusiasm for the learning that can happen through one-to-one conversations and his commitment to helping people work through the difficulties of writing and writing instruction. He has an MA in English Literature from DePaul University, and he completed his PhD in Composition and Rhetoric at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he focused his research on what happens when writers encounter dissonance. His other research interests include writing center theory and pedagogy, writing across the curriculum, apocalyptic rhetoric, and endings.

Associate Director
Emily C. Perkins has over a decade of experience working in higher education at multiple institutions, specifically in areas related to literacy, writing, and academic integrity. After graduating with Honors in Philosophy from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, she completed an MS in Childhood Education, followed by a PhD in Teaching, Curriculum and Change at the University of Rochester. Her dissertation investigated the challenges educators face when trying to make learning to read relevant and meaningful, and demonstrated how canine-assisted reading programs are an innovative way to provide social, emotional, and academic support to all student learners. She recently obtained a Certificate of Advanced Study in Trauma Informed Practice to become a stronger resource and advocate for students as they navigate through their college experience. She brings to 澳门六合彩 her passion and enthusiasm for building relationships across the campus community in efforts to promote best practices for academic success.


Peer Writing Tutors

Brianna is a senior English literature major with a minor in advanced writing from Cicero, New York. Following graduation, she hopes to attend graduate school and become an English teacher. Outside of school, she enjoys journaling, listening to music, and spending time outdoors. This year, she is looking forward to becoming more involved on campus and making new friends.

 

Delaney is a junior biochemistry major with a minor in psychology from Marcellus, New York. She is currently the captain of the Women’s Track and Field team and loves to get involved with various athletics clubs and intramurals on campus. This year she is looking forward to getting to know new people through the Writing Center and staying involved on campus.

 

Diana is a senior psychology major from Queens, New York. She is currently a member of CSTEP, Student Government, Orientation Committee, and other clubs on campus. She enjoys journaling and spending time with her best friends and family. This year she is looking forward to encouraging people to visit the Writing Center.

 

Ella is a senior biology major in the 3+2 Physician's Assistant program from Rochester, NY. Outside of school, she enjoys listening to music, hanging out with family and friends, and camping. She's looking forward to meeting new people and encouraging students to visit the Writing Center.

 

Hannah is a junior political science: pre-law 3+3 major from Rochester, New York. She is currently a member of Dolphins for Humanity and Orientation Committee, and she serves as a campus tour guide. She enjoys listening to music and hanging out with friends and family. This year she is looking forward to meeting new people and making connections around campus

 

Kamilla Shahzad is a senior communications & film studies major who is pursuing minors in film studies and advanced writing. She enjoys reading, writing, photography, and playing music. Her love for writing and helping others led her to join the Writing Center as a tutor. She is excited to work with student writers and to guide them through their writing process as they craft essays, research papers, lab reports, creative pieces, and more. 

 

Marisa is a senior computer science and English major with a creative writing concentration. She has written for the 澳门六合彩 Dolphin newspaper and received the Newhouse Award for fiction in 2023. Marisa has a passion for writing and enjoys all genres--from critical analysis to poetry. She is looking forward to a great semester of helping her peers improve their writing!

 

Nole is a junior biology major from Rochester, New York. He is a part of many STEM clubs on campus and the club lacrosse team and is a member of both the Tau Sigma and Tri Beta honor societies. He enjoys going to concerts, traveling, sports, fishing, and going to the gym. This year, he is looking forwarded to becoming more involved on campus and helping others.

 

Sarah is a senior psychology major with a minor in sociology from Broadalbin, New York. She is a resident advisor in Nelligan Hall and works in the Costume Shop in the PAC. After graduation, she is looking forward to pursuing a master’s in social work. She is excited about her internship in psychology this year and getting to interact with the Syracuse community. 

 

Shameela is a senior psychology major from Buffalo, New York. She is currently a member of CSTEP and a resident advisor. She enjoys listening to music and spending time with family and friends. She's looking forward to making new connections on campus this year.

We are looking for empathetic students from any discipline who care about writing, a range of ideas, and helping others to join us as writing center tutors. New tutors must first take English 393—a course that explores writing center pedagogy, practice, theory, and research.
