Why Join a Learning Community?

  • “I want to meet new people.”
  • “I’m worried about adjusting to college life.”
  • “I won’t know anyone at first.”
  • “If I need help, will I know where to go?”
  • “I want to meet people with similar interests.”

These are common concerns we hear from first-year students. We know that college can be challenging at first…new roommates, new classes, new schedules, new experiences, the 24/7 atmosphere of college life. We also know that your first few months on campus are so important to your college career. That's why we established first-year learning communities. 

These communities help make this “newness” less overwhelming academically and socially. They help you make the transition from high school to college (or from living at home to living and learning on your own!)

Being in a first-year learning community lets you:

  • Make friends quickly. Being in class with students who live near you and share your interests is an easy way for you to connect with your classmates.
  • Get to know faculty. You will participate in activities outside of class with faculty in your field of study. You'll form real connections with our faculty which will build your academic confidence.
  • Excel in your courses. Sharing a few course sections encourages dialogue among students and gives you an opportunity to be involved in study groups.
  • Know your community. When you come to college, you are part of a larger community. Joining a learning community gives you a chance to engage in valuable service to others -- both on and off campus.
  • Feel at home. The closeness that develops in a learning community helps you get used to the college experience quickly because you are doing things together.

Learning community enrollment is voluntary however, nearly a third of the Class of 2023 joined a learning community. While there is a residential component, commuting students are highly encouraged to join.

When Should You Sign Up?

Space in each learning community is limited to about 20 students. Once you decide to attend 澳门六合彩, the best time to sign up is soon after you receive your new student checklist. Join NO LATER THAN May 15 to give yourself the best chance of getting into the learning community you think is the best fit.
