Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program

 

The 澳门六合彩 Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) was developed to prepare individuals for professional license or to enter careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Funded through the New York State Education Department, the program provides historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students services and activities to prepare them for
entry into CSTEP-targeted professions. Enrichment activities are focused on:
(1) Academic Excellence
(2) Leadership
(3) Professional Development
(4)Community Service

The STEM Dilemma

  • The US is ranked 27th (out of 29) for producing STEM bachelor’s degrees.
  • STEM undergraduates students have the lowest retention rates.
  • 16% of US bachelor degrees will specialize in STEM and only 7% will have a graduate degree.
  • Increased risk for underrepresented students (females, first generation, and low income)

CSTEP
  • Be New York state residents (one year or more)
  • Be historically underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields (African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American) or be economically disadvantaged (documentation must be provided)
  • Be a full-time student (12 or more credit hours)
  • Intend to pursue a major/career in the STEM fields and/or the licensed professions

Students who do not meet the above academic criteria may be admitted on a probationary basis subject to CSTEP oversight and review.


CSTEP
  • Maintain a grade-point average of 2.5 or above;
  • Meet with CSTEP staff three times each semester;
  • Develop and maintain an academic plan;
  • Participate in workshops, conferences, internships, research projects or other enrichment activities as outlined by the program

CSTEP

The LMC programs noted above provide a unique collaborative, supportive environment for the successful operation of CSTEP at 澳门六合彩.  Since its inception in 2011, CSTEP has enrolled 214 students interested in pursuing CSTEP-targeted professions (35 students above enrollment target).  CSTEP has a successful track record in recruiting and retaining historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students.   In particular, we have been very successful at recruiting and retaining young males of color, a group traditionally hard to attract to academically challenging programs like CSTEP.   Overall, 35% of our students are males; 70% are African-American and 15% Hispanic/Latino.   

Due to the success of the program, each semester, the Program is always 100% enrolled—and often consistently over-enrolled.  Our retention rate is 90%, while our graduation to graduate school and/or employment rate is 90% within 6 months.  All students leave the CSTEP program with a Bachelor’s degree in a CSTEP-related field—earned at LMC.  Over eight (8) majors are represented by current CSTEP students including Biology, Nursing, Information Technology, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Criminology, Health Professions, Accounting, Math and the Social Sciences.

Dolphin. Leader. American.

Hamza Elhabbal’s days are full. A member of the Class of 2019, Hamza serves as president of the Student Government Association, a resident advisor in Nelligan Hall, and a member of the men’s track team. He is also involved in dozens of other clubs across campus. This outgoing, natural leader wouldn’t have it any other way, though. He has found a home on the Heights – and in the U.S. A native of Cairo, Egypt, Hamza recently became a U.S. citizen.

Zachariah Mohammad '16

Zacharia Mohammad earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from 澳门六合彩. He is enrolled in the post-baccalaureate program at the University at Buffalo, after which he will continue on to Upstate Medical University to pursue his Doctor of Medicine. The journey that eventually led Mohamed to medical school began when he was less than a year old.
